Misfit Shine fitness and sleep tracker Review

Well its a been a while since my last review, but I’ve been busy with my day job!

So why buy a Misfit seeing as I had the app on my Pebble and I’d previously owned a Fitbit HR – well I know that my job means I’m not moving around as much as I’d like, a point proven by the Fitbit and initially proven by the Pebble, but Misfit provided an update to the Pebble  App and it started showing that I was active!  A fair number of people complained but Misfit have seemed to ignore this and me being me I got curious so managed to get hold of a Misfit Shine to compare.

Whats in the box?

A small disc (brushed chrome in my case) made of aluminum (or for the US market Aloominum), button battery, magnetic clasp and a rubber watch strap.

Setting Up.

Simples really, pop the battery in and pair to the app on your phone – all instructions are provided and if you can read and make finger movements then you’ll be up and running in a few minutes.

Use.

Well, you wear it and it does its thing.  Even at night it tracks how well/badly you sleep (assuming you keep it on!).  Open the app and you can sync your data to see how lazy or active you are.  Now the real questionis does it record a different reading to the Misfit app on the Pebble……….yes, the Pebble says I’m nearly twice as active as I am and the shine also ties in with what I was seeing from the Fitbits.  Very disappointing Misfit devs!

Verdict.

Well this was more for a test, but the Shine itself is well made, the strap looks like it won’t last more than a few months though.  I’ll keep it on as its quite small and unobtrusive, plus I didn’t wear the Pebble to track my sleep as its a tad bulky and the screen scratches if you even look at it!

Update – 06/05/2016

So here we are several months later, 1 battery replacement and several scuff marks have been the main things but recently its been doing rather odd things, the pebble doubled my steps, this is randomly ignoring steps and in some extreme cases this has been as much as 70% – then there is the issue of how its calculating steps, the same route for walking the dog shows varying distances from 1.8 to 2.4 miles!

Update – 14/05/2016

After more issues with steps and a less than helpful response from Misfit, I swapped back to the Pebble app, which appears to have been fixed – its actually reporting a much more accurate number of steps which tallies in with what I’d expect and my comparisons with others and other devices.

Misfit did respond to my last support comment with honesty, although admitting they have issues!

We are sincerely sorry that you found your Misfit experience disappointing and that our product failed to meet your expectation. I totally understand your disappointment about this issue and we are fully aware that our products need a lot of improvements. We hope for your understanding that our teams are trying very hard to make our users’ experience even better. We hope that someday we would have the chance to serve your again.

Again, our sincerest apologies for the unpleasant experience. And do let us know if we could be of any further assistance. Your feedback is much appreciated!
